My sixth-grade teacher had a class motto that I’ve carried with me over the years.
She would ask us.
How do you eat an elephant?… One bite at a time.
Meaning that no matter what was happening or what you were going through, we don’t have to tackle it in one huge chunk.
We get to do it bite-sized, by one small piece at a time.
So when I’m overwhelmed about a situation, like I happened to be last week. I knew I needed this reminder, to slow down and break it up into bite-size pieces so that it’s not overwhelming and it feels manageable.
Here’s how I keep my elephant in perspective:
Do a massive brain dump and journal
all of my thoughts, feelings, and fears. Having it all out on paper and out of my head is huge for me.
Sit and listen to my whole body.
I can get stuck in my head and respond in a way that I think I should, but that’s not where I like to be or how I like to run my business. I do so much better when I clear my mind and get out of my head and listen more to my heart and gut.
Get support from others, sometimes I just need to talk it out and hear myself say things out loud, other times I need to be asked questions by people I trust and that get me.
Knowing my big goal.
I need to sit back and determine what my big goal is and make sure that what I’m feeling overwhelmed about is in line with where I’m going and ask myself if it is going to keep me on the right track.
Break down the tasks
into bite-size manageable pieces and place them into my calendar so that I know what I’m working on and when. Mapping it all out takes away the overwhelm and helps me focus on what matters each day.
and Celebrate the wins.
When we do make progress and start going in the right direction don’t forget to stop and remember how far you’ve come and to do something just for you, a little self-care always is deserved.
So no matter what’s going on remember you can only eat an elephant, one bite at a time.
What is your next bite-size step to do on your list?
